New Faces [W]

I think I will update this front page piece by piece this time. First of all I would like to comment on all the nice weather we are getting in Halifax this week. I think I have worn shorts to work everyday this week. And I was able to get out and play some Frisbee... sorry play with a "sport disc" for a while on Monday with mike. More to come after CSI :P

OK, so when I said after CSI, I meant a day after :) I have finally reached the weekend and I can sleep in. It did go out tonight to Pacifico where I was actually able to get mike to go. :) A good time was had by all. And when I say all, I mean myself... and mike I guess. Of interest to some, on our way down, I ran into Devin and he told me that Pacifico got a new DJ who played more housey stuff. And, for the first few songs I was ready to believe him, until the music started to suck. Needless to say, if this was a new guys then he had better start playing some more house- although he did play a lot less hip hop.

Work is busy...busy...busy...etc. :P There is a group with us now that is giving us some headaches, mostly due to the fact that the individuals are being paid for by various organizations - or that is the intention, but we have only received a couple cheques for groups and well... it is just messy. I even had two people come in today are request a refund because they decided to stay in a hotel rather than try to locate the building they were supposed to be in with us. Anyway... that is my rant about work... I'm sure more will follow along my summer.

Beautiful Weekend [W]

So far... :P But I have faith in the fact that, although I think it was supposed to rain the weekend that it will not, at least not until Monday. That would be fine. In other news, GA44 lost a member today. Mike Smit, previously a resident here is now gone. We will mourn the departure of this fine young man and well put some of our junk into his room. :)

lotrI have finished the first book of the Lord of the Rings - "The Fellowship of the Ring" and I am now moving on to the second book, "The Two Towers". I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed the first book and although I had seen the movie first, I was not disadvantaged by it. In retrospect, I think that Peter Jackson and his crew that worked on that movie did an excellent job in capturing the true essence that Tolkien had originally intended. When I first saw the movie, I was completely brought into a world that does not exist and that I think is the desired affect. I am very much looking forward to this second book.

I also splurged a bit today and bought a new ergonomical keyboard. It is funny because it was this $50 keyboard that kept me from buying the $100 cordless trackball. Now, I may have avoided buying it now, but soon, I will likely be back to get it. I must say, I do enjoy this keyboard. One thing that some people might be thinking (mike) is how I was able to install this PS/2 keyboard without sacrificing my impressive idle-time/uptime. Well... it turns out that if you switch the two cords fast enough, the computer doesn't notice. So while I did not restart my computer, I was able to install a cold-install device. I am now going to be watching Vanilla Sky, which is a very good movie. Cheers.

Again once more [W]

I am finding it exceedingly difficult to find the desire to do anything with my web site during the week. And the desire isn't the big part, mostly that is due to the fact that I really don't have that much time. Add on to that the lure of the "Two Towers" and my diabolo, then you have a terrible mess of me not getting any work done.

me and the diaboloI have found a new hobby/obsession in the art of the diabolo. The diabolo that I have now, technically belongs to my brother who acquired it during the annual Buskers Festival a few years ago. Therfore the string has taken some beating over the years and is now in pretty bad shape. Therefore in my quest to find some replacement strings online, I have managed to become quite drawn to the other products many of these sites offer. So I ended up ordering (in addition to 4 replacement strings) a Spintastic Spinabolo Jr. and a diabolo sling. The sling is simply a device that hold two diabolos and a set of sticks so you can carry them on your back. It was $10 US so I knew that I had to get one. So I'm sure that I will be letting everyone know when they arrive (in "2 to 3 weeks") I have also started a diabolo page on my site so you can check my "progress" in mastering the diabolo there.

Now I'm off to take care of my weekly errands which includes buying some stuff to make some new handsticks for my diabolo. Cheers everyone.

Diabolos [N]

At the advice of my manager, I am just making everyone aware that I added a diabolo page to my site.

One of those days... [W]

Please note that tomorrow, June 11, there will be a brief power outage at around 9:00 AM for 4 hours (or at least that is what the power company says). I will powering down my server here at around 8:20 or so when I go to work and it will be down until at least 1:00 PM possibly later if I can't get home to turn it back on. During this time, some graphics and all of my photo collection will be unavailable. I doubt this will affect borg so the rest of my site should still be available. Thank You.
I must say that today has started off well. And well, I mean terrible. It started off with me getting up at 6:00 AM (although, I can only blame myself for that). Then when I am getting dressed, the fire alarm goes off. That wasn't that, bad, just a nuisance - although I doubt Kieran liked it. In fact, two very funny lines came out of that experience. The first was from Ben when asked if they were cooking, "Yea, if by cooking you mean sleeping." And the second was from one of the Dal Security officers "You should ask your RA to give cooking lessons, because it look like someone was trying to make French Toast, but it went all to hell from there." Pure gold. And to top it off, when I was walking to work, I was almost hit by a car, I mean very almost hit by a car. Stupid drivers that don't signal a turn and then make it anyway - at the last possible second, very fast and don't look out for people crossing the road. It is really quite amazing how far and high I can jump when my personal safety is threatened.

harry kuntzOK, I was just closing out some rooms around Summer Orientation when I came across the name you see in that picture. I swear that there was no tampering of any kind, I just took a screen shot and cropped. I'm scared to think that this might actually be someone's name, but you never know. Smells of a joke to me though. Now this is gold. :P

It turns out that one of my co-workers has actually had to call this person whom I'm told is a senior. Still sounds iffy... I hope he pronounces it KOONTZ.

Holy cats Batman! [W]

The crisis is over. The power was out for about four hours today, but everything is back in working order now.
Tonight is Movie Night! And you know what that means? ... movies I guess... two of them. :P Whatever. But seriously, it is Tuesday so what else am I supposed to say. In fact the only reason that I am writing this is so that I can replace what I wrote yesterday. And seriously, if you didn't see what I had yesterday about that name I found in the system, you should definitely do that. It is worth a smile, if you don't break out laughing.

I'm thinking about changing the colour of my links on the page because I find that some people are missing the links I occasionally put in this main page because they are so similar to the text colour. I was thinking maybe blue or an orange. I will experiment over the next couple days, so worry not if you notice that. Not that you would care, or even ask me what was up. Where's my stamp? "So Alone." :P

Life is Fine [W]

It's Saturday and it's raining. That shouldn't be allowed to happen. Mike, deal with this will you. It doesn't seem fair that I would be trapped inside at work all week and then on the weekend, be trapped inside at home. But I did get out earlier to see the Bourne Identity. I must say that it was a good movie. I was wondering if Matt Damon could pull off the role of a special agent, and he did. Quite well actually, so I would definitely recommend that you go see it if you are looking for some entertainment this weekend.

... I must have been unhappy in high school.
I was going to go get some groceries tonight, but as I mentioned earlier, it is raining and therefore I am not going outside. Ever. Well... until it stops raining. I was/am cleaning my room and I found my old journals from high school (back when I used a pen and paper instead of PHP and MySQL :P) and went walking down nostalgia lane. Of course this wasn't a very long walk because I was never the most faithful guy when it came to writing in those things. I had two books and both only contained writing on the first dozen or so pages and that was it. The last entry was from Sept 16, 2000! So I sat down and wrote a few pages bringing the book up to date. I have discovered from reading these books that I must have been unhappy in high school. It sounds like people really pissed me off... I guess little has changed there... :P But seriously I feel a hell of a lot happier than I seemed to in those journals. I would like to thank all of the friends that I have made since starting university... you guys are likely part of the reason that I am so much better off now. Cheers. Not to say that I didn't have friends in high school, but it was different then.

If anyone has ever played six degrees of separation, or whatever you call it when you try to find a path from one actor to another or one movie to another using people who starred in particular movies along the way... well I have a link that you should know about: The Oracle: Star Links. This reference is good when you are really interested in how close two people can be. I have been playing this at work with my friend Andrew and he is actually the one that showed me this page - of course it doesn't compare to doing it yourself... but it is cool. :P

Weather [N]

There is now live weather status for Halifax on my front page. I parse this directly from the Environment Canada Weather Office. I may also provide forecast info in the near future.

De-whacking [W]

That's right. I'm trying to be a whore and add to my site each instance of the Google Whacking words mentioned on the exchange. That way... I can throw it all off. :P If you aren't getting the exchange the Google whacking is the challenge to find two words which when searched for together yield exactly one result. However, adding them to my site will mean two results :).

  • frantling episode
  • antiestablishment cranium
  • etc... clearly this isn't working ;P
clear nightOh and I'm not sure if anyone noticed, but I have the current Halifax weather on my site now. I can parse any city in Canada. This will be useful when we do a Halifax page. :P I do however have a tough time believing that the visibility at night is 24km though.

pre-rince I'm not sure if I told anyone on here, but I dyed my hair last week. Red. Not a Chris, Summer 2001 red, but just a brick color on top of my brown hair. It didn't turn out as red as the box led me to believe, but I didn't bother bleaching it and overall I am pleased with the results. I'm going to let it grow out a bit and then cut it again and try bleaching it... see what that looks like. Or whatever... I guess I'll have to wait and see.

Movies [N]

For the benefit of anyone who reads this page, I have made the list of my most recently viewed movies into a database table. Previously it was just hardcoded in by hand whenever I watched something. Now, I can add new movies on the web and link them to IMDB as well. I have also decided to rate the movies.

Solitaire [W]

So now I am all by myself in my 3 bedroom apartment. You can't beat only paying $160 / month for that. :) Oh course in order to get that rate, I slave away for Housing, Conference and Ancillary Services, answering the phone all day, which may sound like an easy job, yet it is so incredibly taxing that at the end of the day, all I can do is take a nap (in my cheap apartment). But such is life and I do really enjoy the people I work with.

I am going to start adding thumbnails to my pictures on the website. I am using CKRenamer to rename the files from the default Image001.jpg... etc to something at least more informative. Then I am using PictureTray (thanks mike) to rotate my pics that need rotating. And then I can use EasyThumbs to create the thumbnails (again, thank you mike).

It really is quite a long day on the weekend when you get up before 8AM. Normally I stay up later and sleep until noon or so, but with it being so warm,

...does anyone know where I can get some dry ice?
I tend to only want to stay in bed until I first wake up which is around 7:30 - 8am because that is around when I have to be up normally. That is one draw back about the apartment - it gets damn hot in here. Mostly the bedrooms because the sun comes in. The living room is usually quite dark all day and doesn't get the same heat. Of course the heat was still on until yesterday - I turned it off because there are no more Bermudians living here right now. (Although it was great to have you here K) SO out of curiousity, does anyone know where I can get some dry ice?
